29.

If a>1,a\gt1, then the sum of the real solutions of a−a+x=x \sqrt{a-\sqrt{a+x}}=x is equal to
a−1\sqrt a-1
a−12\frac{\sqrt a-1}{2}
a−1\sqrt{a-1}
a−12\frac{\sqrt{a-1}}2
4a−3−12\frac{\sqrt{4a-3}-1}{2}
Answer: E
Concepts:radicalquadraticcasework
Small hint:
The principal square root forces x≥0x\ge0
Big hint:
After one squaring, factor a difference involving a+x−x\sqrt{a+x}-x
Solution:
Since x≥0,x\ge0, squaring once gives a−a+x=x2.a-\sqrt{a+x}=x^2. Let y=a+x.y=\sqrt{a+x}. Then y=a−x2y=a-x^2 and a=y2−x,a=y^2-x, so 0=(y+x)(y−x−1). 0=(y+x)(y-x-1). Since y+x>0,y+x\gt0, we have y=x+1,y=x+1, or a+x=x+1.\sqrt{a+x}=x+1. Therefore a+x=x2+2x+1a+x=x^2+2x+1 and x2+x+1−a=0. x^2+x+1-a=0. The only nonnegative root is x=4a−3−12,x=\frac{\sqrt{4a-3}-1}{2}, and it satisfies the original equation. It is therefore also the sum of all real solutions.
Therefore, the correct answer is E.
